About this journey
What the drive is actually like
Taif sits 1,900 metres above sea level, and the temperature difference from Makkah is startling. The road up — either the Al Hada mountain road with its switchbacks and viewpoints or the newer Al Kar route — is one of the best drives in the Kingdom.
The 90 km takes about an hour and forty minutes because of the climb. Ask the driver to pause at one of the escarpment viewpoints; the view back down over the valley is worth the five minutes.
